William James Farquharson was born May 26, 1917, in Hobe Sound, Florida, the son of Theodore and Lenora (Tynes) Farquharson. He had an older brother, Stanley Barnest Farquharson, born in 1915. Their father, Theodore, was a native of the Bahamas, giving his birthplace as "Long Key, Fortune Island." He worked at "farm labor."
William lived in the Bronx, New York, prior to his death on November 29, 2003 at the Williamsbridge Manor Nursing Home. He was buried on Hart Island. His brother, Stanley, died in Ocean City, Maryland on October 6, 2005.
