The only Velma Skaggs born in 1915 in all US records was the daughter of Maymie (Lord) (a seamstress) and Gus Georgalas (a fruit vendor).

She is listed as a 25-year old "shop girl" in the 1940 US Census, living in Volusia County/Daytona Beach FL. The census' handwritten copy clearly shows "Skaggs" but whomever or whatever copied the information over electronically has her as "Skapps". Velma was "discovered" by researching her mother, Maymie. What caused Velma to move to NYC while her mother and father remained in Florida is unknown.

Maymie died on June 7, 1959 after a six-month stay at the "county hospital", Tampa General Hospital in Hillsborough County, Florida, and her daughter Velma was listed in the funeral home record as living in NYC at that time.

Maymie was born on February 16, 1888, and was the daughter of George Lord and Elenor Triese.  Maymie is buried under marker 871 at the Hillsborough County "Cemetery for All People", as it renamed its Potter's Field in October 2015.

Velma was a resident of Fieldston House, a nursing facility in Riverdale prior to her death in 1998.
