Leo (Louis) Morris Drachsler. City College, New York, 1920
Added by Ann Bernstein

Valerie Drachsler was born in Suczany, Hungary on the 16th of February 1892.  Suczany, or Sučany, is now part of the Zîlina Region of modern Slovakia.

Valerie, her parents, Jacob and Lottie (Charlotte), and her five siblings: Annie (Aranka), Arthur (Abraham), Julius, Helen and Louis (Leo), traveled from Hungary in 1903 to make a new life in the United States.

The family settled in Manhattan, and at seventeen, Valerie went to work in a millinery shop, or dress house, where she was employed as an embroiderer.  She worked in this profession for many years.

Tragically, Valerie lost three family members in a ten year time span:  Annie died in 1920 when just 34 years old, Julius, a professor at the City College of New York, died from tuberculosis at just 38 years, and mother, Lottie, died in 1930 at the age of 68.  All are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Saddle Brook, New Jersey.

In the years that followed, Jacob, Leo, Arthur and Helen would also be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.

Valerie Drachsler died on the 26th of February 1988 at Mount Sinai West Hospital and was buried on Hart Island on the 20th of April 1988.
