Ulysses G. Jefferson was born November 2, 1914, in Randolph County, Georgia, the son of Arthur and Charity "Chattie" (Kitchen) Jefferson. He had two brothers: R.D. born around 1913, and Loren, probably born in early 1914. The family lived on Morgan Road in 1920, and their father, Arthur, was a farmer. In 1930 the family had moved to Gaffs Mill, Georgia, where they were joined by a widowed cousin, Laura Thompson, and a school teacher, Delita Carter, who boarded in their home.
Ulysses lived in Florida for a time prior to 1950. He died on May 24, 1992, at the Mount Sinai Medical Center; and was buried on Hart Island.
