Thalia B. Stanley was born July 29, 1893, in Madrid, Spain, the daughter of Ellena Stanley (a widow born in May of 1858, also in Spain.) They both emigrated to the United States in 1895. From around 1900 through 1910 Ellena worked as a translator/interpreter for the courts; and in 1915 she was employed as a seamstress, and daughter Thalia was working as a stenographer. They lived on Charles Street in Manhattan, then later at 30 Bank Street in the West Village neighborhood.
On August 18, 1917, Thalia married Frederick H. Cornelius in Manhattan; but by 1930 she was again using her maiden name of "Stanley," and gave her marital status as "widow." She lived at 78 W. 120th Street in what is now known as the Mount Morris Park area of Harlem.
Thalia B. Stanley died September 6, 1990, at the Florence Nightingale Nursing Home. She is buried on Hart Island.
