Robert Bachek was born November 1, 1915 in Islip, New York, the son of Michael and Pauline Bachek. Both parents were immigrants from what they called "Bohemia", now known as the Czech Republic. He had siblings- Robert born 1915, Julia born around 1917, Louis born 1918, and Frank born 1921. Their father supported the family by working as a general laborer.
On May 20, 1925 Robert's mother died. She was buried at the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Suffolk County, New York. In 1930 Michael and the children were still living in Islip, where Michael worked as a "truckman" for the Town Board.
In 1940 Robert and his brother Louis were living on Brook Street with their paternal grandmother Mary Bachek. They both worked as laborers at a "bulb farm,"
Following the United States entering World War II, Robert registered for the draft. He stated he lived on Commack Road in Islip, and named his grandmother Bachek as the "person who will always know your address." He was unemployed, and described as 5' 7" tall, weighed 164 pounds, with brown eyes, brown hair, a dark complexion and "tattoos on both arms" and "scar on right elbow."
Robert enlisted as a Private in the U.S. Army on June 19, 1942 at Fort Jay on Governor's Island. At that time he was married and living in Queens, New York. His brothers Louis and Frank both also served in the Army during World War II, and luckily all three of them survived.
Robert's father Michael Bachek died on March 4, 1976, and was buried near his first wife Pauline in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Robert Bachek died on March 1, 1987. He was buried April 3, 1987 on Hart Island. His brother Louis was buried in the Long Island National Cemetery in 1952, and brother Frank was buried in the Calverton National Cemetery in 1981, both in Suffolk County, New York.
