Richard Joseph Mulholland was born March 25, 1910 in New York, New York, the son of John "Jack" and Mary Mulholland. He was one of eight siblings: Loretta, Alice, John Jr., Edward, Richard, William, Hugh and Daniel. In 1910 the family (then with only five children) lived on W. 171st Street in Manhattan. Their father John was employed as an automobile mechanic.
Five years (and two more children) later John was working as a bricklayer. The 1920 Federal census showed the family living on W. 147th Street, and the 1925 New York state census showed them at E. 205th Street. By then sister Loretta was married to Michael Halloran, and they, with their infant daughter, were also part of the household.
In 1930 the family had moved to 7054 Broadway in Queens. John, and son John Jr., were both working as bricklayers. Edward was an artist in advertising, Richard was in the Coast Artillery of the U.S. Army, William was a plumber's helper, Hugh an office  boy in a carpet store, and the married Loretta (now with two daughters) was a clerk for the telephone company.
On April 28, 1934 Richard married Julia Stagliano in Queens, New York. The couple had three children: Richard, Rose A. and Jack. The 1940 census listed Richard as a Private, 1st BN 16th Infantry in Corona, Long Island, Queens. When Richard registered for the draft during World War II, he stated he was unemployed. He gave his address as 370 8th Avenue New York, New York. As the "person who will always know your address" he named his sister Loretta rather than a spouse. He was described as 5' 9" tall, weighed 165 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, a ruddy complexion and a "scar-right leg."
In 1950 Julia Mulholland listed her marital status as "separated", and she had all three children living with her. When she died in 1971, her obituary mentioned children Richard, Rose and Jack, but no mention of her husband.
Richard's last residence was in Brooklyn, New York. He was able to claim his Social Security benefits beginning September 24, 1973.
Richard Joseph Mulholland died on August 11, 1988 (August 14 according to Social Security records.) He was buried October 5, 1988 on Hart Island.
