Richard H. McDuffee/McDuffie was born July 26, 1913, in Candia, New Hampshire, the son of Arthur H. and Ada B. (Lewis) McDuffee. In 1920 he was living with his grandparents, Horace and Addie McDuffee, in Manchester, New Hampshire, where his grandfather operated a sawmill. 1930 found Richard living in Newport, New Hampshire, and working at a sawmill as a "marker."

In 1934 he married Ann Miller, the daughter of William and Mary (Forys) Miller, in Newport, New Hampshire. Richard gave his occupation as "U.S. Navy", and the bride as "shoe worker." It was the first marriage for both parties, and they were married by a priest in the Episcopal Church.

There is a ship passenger list from December 1939 which showed Richard traveling on the SS Panama, from Cristobal, Canal Zone, Panama, to New York City. At that time he gave his address as Hotel Taft in New York City.

The couple lived in Concord, New Hampshire in 1941 and 1942, and in Manchester, New Hampshire between 1946 and 1949.

Richard H. McDuffee died April 10, 1987, at Coler-Goldwater Memorial Hospital, and was buried on Hart Island.
