Norman Michael Ghinger was born on 1 September 1907 in New York.  His brother, Arnold, was his twin and only sibling.  Norman's father, Joseph, was a Polish immigrant, and his mother, Johannah, or Hannah Loewy, was from Hungary.

Norman became a diamond setter and joined the family jewelry business, J. Ghinger & Sons, located in the Bronx.  The name was changed to Ghinger Bros. & Young after the death of Joseph Ghinger.

Norman is described on his WWII Draft Registration Card as being 6 feet tall, with hazel eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.  In 1936 he married Mary Markman.  Two children were born of this marriage.

Norman died at Hebrew Hospital Home in the Bronx on 21 October 1995 and was buried on Hart Island on 29 April 1997.
