Meyer Gazes was born January 5 or 6, 1912, in New York City, the son of Aaron and Ida Gazes. Both parents were Russian immigrants who spoke Yiddish as their native tongue. Aaron Gazes was in the furniture business in Brooklyn, and other children in the family were Irving, Abraham, Morris and Sadie.
On November 30, 1942, Meyer enlisted in the Army "for the duration of the War." He gave his civil occupation category as "managers and officials", and his marital status as "single with dependents." He was 5'1" and weighed 124 pounds. His education consisted of "four years of college." He remained in the Army until December 20, 1945.
Meyer Gazes died June 1, 1984, in New York City, a resident of Brooklyn for almost his entire life. He was buried on Hart Island.
