Mayfield Andrew Covington was born February 12, 1924, in Wadesboro, North Carolina, the son of Richard and Lilly (Lowery) Covington. His father, Richard was a farmer who rented both his land and their home. Mayfield was the youngest of a very large family. His siblings were: Thomas, Arlina, Freddie, Annetta, Ottis, Burtis, Bessie, Wilson, Argia, Mildred, Jennie, and Bettie Jean.
Their father died in June of 1935, and by 1940 Lilly had remarried, to James Lore. Lilly still had 3 teenagers at home- Mayfield and two older sisters. James had a 12 year old girl- Mattie. The couple supported this much smaller family group with James working odd jobs, and Lilly as a laundress.
As an adult, Mayfield lived in the state of Maryland some time prior to 1951; and for a time at 1940 Lexington Avenue in New York City.
Mayfield Covington died on July 21, 1998 (according to Social Security records); and was buried on Hart Island.
