Mansel Philip Murphy was born February 25, 1924, in Ridgeway, South Carolina, the son of Elliott and Martha (Gladden) Murphy. He had a grammer school education, and worked as a farm hand.
Mansel enlisted in the Army on April 24, 1943, at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, "for the duration of the War...plus six months." He gave his marital status as, "single with dependents."
Mansel still lived in South Carolina through 1952, but by 1999 his address was in Flushing, Queens, New York.
Mansel Murphy died May 22, 1999, at Elmhurst Medical Center, and he was buried on Hart Island.
