Leyla Was My Hero - She identified one of the people responsible for the brutal murder of Lorena Escalera back in 2012, which as this writing (7.15.25) remains assigned to the "Cold Case Unit."  Three days later, Leyla was administered a fatal overdose by Brandon J. Nagy. Sadly, Nagy employed this tactic because he knows that detectives, especially the one assigned to investigate her death, wouldn't look past the toxicology report. Even with an eye witness who claims he nearly died taking 1/2 of the substance provided by Nagy. A mutual friend of Leyla reached out to her mother after her death. Sadly, she too was sold on drugs being the cause of her death and said "I want nothing to do with her."  Now she lays forever in a tomb designed for the unclaimed souls swallowed by the mean streets of New York City. My efforts to enact "Leyla's Law" will continue, I'm happy to say. It's a step up from the "Good Samaritan Law," making it illegal for people who are in the presence of someone who overdosed to leave the scene without notifying paramedics first. The law currently excludes criminal prosecution for someone who stands by as paramedics arrive. Something Brandon Nagy most decidedly did not do. I was dismayed to learn that not even the hotel staff seemed concerned from her untimely passing. Two friends of mine claim they alerted 2 staff members to her fate and were met with "when Mr. Nagy returns we'll address this." Nagy never returned and Leyla, of Cuban descent, was left for nearly 24-hours in that room until the cleaning lady found her the following day. In addition to identifying Rande or Yande as one of the two people responsible for Lorena's death, she also told me something very important that night. "They're listening to your phone." I later learned the technology used to do this is called "Shell," developed by Chinese drug dealers living in New York City. May she rest in peace, and know that I understand she has joined others who have been moving the breeze in the direction I need to be heading since I was a child.  I love you, dear friend! Thank you!
