     Leila Medorah Pennycook Mills was born in Myersville, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica (British West Indies) on the 3rd of May 1900.  Her parents, Charles Pennycook and Alice Maitland Pennycook had four other children:  Jemima Wilhelmina, Alice Teresa, Charles Rickard, Bartley Westherbert.


Leila emigrated to the United States from Jamaica in November of 1923 aboard the S.S. Favorita.  She was 23 years old and traveled alone to New York to reunite with her sister, Mrs. J. Sutherland.


In 1929, Leila married Josiah Mills, also a native of Jamaica.  She was the mother of two daughters:  Beryl, born in 1919, and Eugenie, born in 1921.  Both children were born and lived in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica.


On the 1940 U.S. Census records Leila living alone in Manhattan and engaged in work as a "domestic" for a private home.


Leila M. Mills died at the Mount Sinai Hospital on the 1st of January 1989 and was buried on Hart Island on the 13th of April 1989.
