Jule B. (Hubner) Waldmann and George R. Waldmann
Jule B. Hubner was born September 4, 1898, in New York City, the daughter of Julius and Anna (Jiran) Hubner. Both of her parents were immigrants from “Bohemia”, an area in eastern Europe once part of the vast Austro-Hungarian empire also known as Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic.) In the early years of the 20th century the family made their home on East 72nd Street in Manhattan, where the father, Julius, worked as a silk weaver in a ribbon factory. Around 1910, the mother, Anna, also worked as a cigar maker in a factory, likely leaving the care of her children to her mother, Mary Jiran, who was living with them. Jule had three younger sisters: Rose, Mary, and Anna; an older brother Joseph, and a younger brother, Julius.
In 1920 Jule was working as a telephone operator; and in 1922 she married George R. Waldmann. George was born January 17, 1900, in Elizabethport, New Jersey. He was a veteran of WWI, serving in the U.S. Army from March 23, 1918 to February 1, 1919. The couple made their home at 11 Dalton Court in Rockville Centre, New York, where they would live for the next sixty years. They had two daughters (possibly twins), Joyce A. and Ruth F., both born in 1924 in New York City. In 1935, when the girls were 11 years old, the family vacationed in Bermuda, traveling on the Queen of Bermuda. Three years later, Jule and George took a mid-winter break from New York, again traveling to Bermuda, this time sailing on the Monarch of Bermuda.
Georges work career was spent primarily at one location- 14 Wall Street in Manhattan. The 37 floor skyscraper in the heart of the financial district, directly across from the New York Stock Exchange was the headquarters of the Bankers Trust. George described the work that he did variously as “statistician for a broker”, “office manager for a commercial bank,” and from 1943 through at least 1960 as a “correspondant.”
George R. Waldmann died, aged 86, on January 23, 1986; and Jule B. Waldmann died, aged 94, on October 18, 1992. Up until the time of their deaths they were still living in Rockville Centre.
They are both buried on Hart Island.
