Joseph Coxel, born Jose Marian Carvalho Coxel, was born January 6, 1904 in Figuiro Algedres, Portugal, the son of Adelaide Marques Santos. At the age of 16 he left Lisbon and boarded the S.S. Canada to voyage alone to the United States. He paid $25 for a ticket to Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where his cousin Lucia S. Marques lived. He arrived in the United States on August 7, 1920, not only young but small, being only 4' 8" tall.
On July 26, 1933 Joseph declared his intent to become a United States citizen. He had been using the name "Joe Marques" but chose to become officially Joseph Marques Coxel. He was living at 124 E. 115th Street in New York City, and worked as a waiter.
Joseph took the Oath of Allegiance on November 12, 1941, becoming a citizen less than a month before America's entry into World War II. He registered for the draft and stated that he was working as a waiter at the Bankers Club of America at 120 Broadway. He was described as 5 feet tall, weighed 138 pounds, with brown eyes, black hair, and a light complexion.
Joseph Marques Coxel died on March 1, 1978 at NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue. He was buried April 3, 1987 on Hart Island.
