John Crawshaw was born October 26, 1892 in England He immigrated to the United States in 1927. On June 23, 1928 in Manhattan, John married Helen N. Arroyo (or Arscot, depending on the record examined.) Helene had immigrated to the U.S. in 1926 from "English Canada."
In 1930 the couple was livingĀ on 83rd Street in Queens. John was working as a piano tuner. Ten years later he was working as a furniture carpenter, and Helene was working as a milliner.
When John registered for the draft during World War II, he stated that he was self-employed. They had moved to 77 Irving Place, New York City. John was described as 5' 3" tall, weighed 125 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.
In 1950 John and Helene had moved once again to 102 E. Second Street. John (not Helene) was working at "custom millinary in millinary retail."
John retired and began receiving Social Security payments in February of 1970.
John Crawshaw died on July 5, 1985 at Peninsula Hospital Center. He was buried August 6, 1985 on Hart Island.
