     Johanna Maria Smit emigrated from Hof van Delf in Southern Holland in 1930 at the age of 35.  She traveled alone and her stated destination was the Leo Catholic Welfare House in New York.  In Holland, she left behind her father, Arie Smit, mother, Elisabeth Gerarda Smit, and two siblings.


Her citizenship papers in 1935 describe a woman who is 5 feet 9 inches tall, with blue-gray eyes, and blonde hair.  Her stated occupation is "maid."


In 1940, Johanna lived in a rooming house on East 53rd St. Manhattan and worked as a waitress.


The details of Johanna's life for the next 55 years are as yet unknown.  


Johanna Maria Smit died at the Concourse Rehab and Nursing Center in the Bronx on 19 September 1996 and was buried on Hart Island on 12 March 1998.
