James Lineen was born July 25, 1907, in New York, the son of Irish immigrants Michael and Catherine Lineen. He was the middle child, with two older sisters: Helen and Catherine, and a younger brother- John, and youngest sister- Anastatia.
James attended school through the eighth grade. The family lived in Brooklyn, New York in 1930 at 174A Veronica Place. The father, Michael, supported the family by working as a truck driver, assisted by sister Helen, who worked in a shoe factory, and brother John, who was a "radio mechanic."
In 1940 James was listed as an inmate at the Brooklyn State Hospital.
James Lineen died February 9, 1996, at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, and was buried on Hart Island on August 19, 1998.
