Irving Isaac Eckman, DDS, was born January 6, 1907 in New York City. He was the son of Jacob and Rebecca (Koplowitz) Eckman. Both parents were Russian/Jewish immigrants, and his father, Jacob, ran a candy and confectionary store. He had a younger sister, Rose, born around 1911. The family made their home in the Bronx, where, even at the age of 33, Irving lived with his parents and worked as a dentist.
During WWII, Irving enlisted in the Army on October 13, 1942, serving until September 5, 1946 and attaining the rank of Captain.
Irving's father, Jacob ("beloved husband of Rebecca, devoted father of Rose Bloch and Irving Eckman"), died in April of 1950.
Irving was married to Sarah, who was born in 1913. She was a graduate of Hunter College, and worked as an employment counsellor in the medical field. They had two sons: Arthur and Peter, and by the time Sarah died in 1995 they also had a grand-daughter, Noelle. Irving and Sarah lived at 2550 Webb Avenue in the Bronx.
Irving Eckman died aged 94, on September 17, 2001 at St. Barnabas Hospital. He donated his body to medicine and was buried on Hart Island in 2003.
