"IRENE CUMMING KLEEBERG
Past President

Irene Kleeberg was President of RWA/NYC from 1998-2000.She was always very enthusiastic and supportive of her fellow writers, and helped organize the Chapter’s Writing Workshop Series, which were held at the offices of the Editorial Freelancer’s Association, where she was on the Board.Irene also used her contacts to secure the Mercantile Library to hold the old Wine & Cheese Receptions, now the
Golden Apple Awards. Irene was a member of Sisters in Crime and a board member of The Editorial Freelancer’s Association.She was a freelance writer and editor, and worked at Women’s Wear Daily and at Black Enterprise.Irene also did extensive volunteer work, including welcoming United Nation families to New York and working with the NYC Police Department’s 17th Precinct Community Council. Among
the famous people she encountered in her lifetime, were Andy Warhol, whom she met when he did illustrations of shoes for WWD, and Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is also an alumni of Wellesley College where Irene went to school. Irene passed away in 2009."

"Kleeberg, Irene Cumming NEW YORK, N.Y. Irene Cumming, freelance writer and editor, died on August 18, 2009 in New York. Daughter of the late James and Ducksilla (nee Elsie Battin) Cumming, she was born April 21, 1932 in Chicago. She graduated from Summit (N.J.) High School and earned a B.A. from Wellesley College in 1954. She published books from "Christianity" to the "Butterick Fabric Handbook." Her volunteer work included UN families, East Side Community Center, P.S. 59 PTA, NYPD's 17th Pct. Comm. Council, Romance Writers-NYC, Editorial Freelancer's Assoc. and Sisters in Crime. Her children have enjoyed her love, friendship, wit and intellect to the very end. Her husband Fred M. Kleeberg predeceased her. She is survived by her son, John Kleeberg of New York; and her daughter, Margaret Kelly and her husband Paul Kelly and granddaughters Marta and Anna of Greenville, N.Y. She is also survived by her brother, Jack (Valerie) Cumming of Carlsbad, Calif. and sister, Carol (Allan) Peterson of Gilbert, Ariz. Memorial service August 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Mercantile Library, 17 East 47 Street, New York City. Donations in her memory can be made to the Wellesley Students' Aid Society, Wellesley College, 106 Central Street, Wellesley, MA 02481.
