Ira Nordheim was born January 30, 1899 in New York City, the son of Samuel and Rachel (Kimmelsteil) Nordheim. Ira had at least two siblings: Jonas born around 1886, and Theresa "Tessie" born 1894. In 1900 the family lived at 2516 8th Avenue in Manhattan, New York. Ira's father Samuel was supporting the family by working as a silk weaver.
By 1910 the family was living at 1412 Prospect Avenue in the Bronx. Samuel had changed his career, and was working as an insurance agent. Establishing a pattern of moving frequently, in 1915 they had moved to 1018 Hoe Avenue.
Ira's mother Rachel Nordheim died between 1915 and 1920.
During World War I, Ira was 19, and required to register for the draft. Living at 305 Haven Avenue in Manhattan, Ira was working as a clerk. He was described as medium build, medium height, with green eyes and dark brown hair.
In 1920 the widowed Samuel, Tessie and Ira had moved to 307 Haven Avenue in Manhattan. Tessie kept the house, Samuel continued working as an insurance agent, and Ira, at age 20, was working as a buyer for a wholesale house company. Five years later the three of them had moved once more, but only two buildings away, to 305 Haven Avenue. The only other change was that Ira was working as an art salesman.
At the time of the 1930 census, Ira and his father were still living together, at 520 W. 190th Street in Manhattan. Samuel was working at this own insurance office, and Ira was employed as a salesman dealing in linens.
In 1940, having moved yet again, Ira and Samuel were living on 43rd Street in Queens. Samuel at 77 still identified himself as an insurance agent, although he had an income of zero. Ira continued to work as a traveling salesman with wholesale linen, and had an approximate annual income of $2340.
Ira registered for the draft around 1940. Still sharing a home with his father, they were at 3724 75th Street in the Jackson Heights neighborhood in Queens. Ira was working for Schwab and Schwab on 26th Street in New York City. He was described as 5' 9 1/2" tall, and weighed 1710 pounds.
Ira married Ruth Prober on May 21, 1943 in Manhattan. In 1950 the couple was living at 203 W. 74th Street in New York City. Ira continued his career working for a linen manufacturer, and wife Ruth worked as a buyer for a department store.
By 1960 they were living at 405 W. 23rd Street, Manhattan. In 1966 Ira was able to begin receiving Social Security benefits. His last residence was in the Bronx.
Ira Leopold Nordheim died April 15, 1993 at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was buried almost two years later, March 3, 1995, on Hart Island.
