Henry Hanard Jr. was born July 28, 1901 in New York City, the son of Henry and Lottie Hanard. Other children in the family were Jessie, Margaret, Joseph, Caroline (Carrie), and Minnie. In 1905 the family was living in Manhattan, but for most of his life Henry gave his address as the Bronx. He had a sixth grade education, and by 1920, at the age of 19, he was working as a plumber. In 1940, Henry, age 38 and single, was still living with his elderly father and his sister Minnie, on Southern Blvd.
In 1942 Henry enlisted as a private in the Army, "for the duration of the war...plus six months." He was "single with dependents", was 5'6" and weighed 139 pounds.
Henry Hanard Jr. died June 11, 1987, and was buried on Hart Island.
