Hans Marinius Jergensen Gjersoe was born on the 15th of December 1900 in Oslo, the beautiful capital city of Norway.  He lived in Oslo with father, Hans Jorgensen Gjersoe, mother, Anna Matilde Anderson Gjersoe, two sisters, Irma and Magnhild, and a brother, name unknown.

Hans traveled to the United States during the 1920's as a ship's crew member and continued working aboard various ships for several years.  At some point, he was discharged from duty, or deserted, in order to remain in the USA.  He applied for citizenship and in 1942 married Edith Brown in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1947, Hans and Edith traveled together to visit Oslo, Norway.  Edith died in New York in 1961 at the age of 59.
