Eva Penn Preston was born April 15, 1895 in North Carolina, the daughter of Nathaniel and Lucy Penn. Her siblings were Alta M, Maggie, Hester, Beatrice and Jessie. In 1900 the family lived on Hickory Street in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and her father supported the family as a tobacco worker.
In 1910 the family was living on Linden Street, and daughters Maggie, Eva and Hester had joined Nathaniel working in the tobacco factory. Eva and Hester (at ages 16 and 15) worked as "stemmers."
On October 20, 1916 Eva married William "Willie" Preston in Forsyth, North Carolina. Willie was the son of John and Mariah Preston, of Winston-Salem. Willie and Eva both worked in a tobacco factory. They had at least one child, William Nathaniel Preston.
Eva's father Nathaniel Penn died on November 11, 1949 of "cerebral thrombosis and diabetes mellitus."
Eva's Social Security number was issued before 1951 in North Carolina. Her last residence was in New York City.
Eva Penn Preston died June 18, 1985 at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center. She was buried on Hart Island almost three years later, March 8, 1988.
