Eugene F. Kyhlberger was born April 23, 1911, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Joseph Eugene and Signe Louise (Möller) Kyhlberger. Both parents were Swedish immigrants. His father Joseph had been married once before to Eva Sofia (Född), and they had at least two children: Ruth Eugenia born September 29, 1900 in Örebro, Sweden, and Ragner B. born in 1910 (both very likely died in infancy or early childhood.) Besides Eugene, Joseph and Signe then had Karl born in 1913, Leonard born in 1914, Svea born in 1916 and Ingrid Margaret born on May 16, 1924. Joseph supported both his first and second families by working as a baker in Brooklyn.
On December 18, 1912, Joseph, Signe and two year old Eugene traveled from Göteborg, Sweden on the ship Salmo, and later on the Haverford, ultimately bound for New York. At some point during the Liverpool to Philadelphia leg of the journey, the family of three became four, with the birth of baby Karl.
By 1918 the family was living at 465 DeKalb Ave. in Brooklyn, NY, and father Joseph was working as a driver for H.C. Dahl and Son.
Eugene enlisted in the New York National Guard on January 20, 1930, serving in Co. C 106th Infantry. At the age of 18, Eugene was still living with his family at 980 Kent Ave. in Brooklyn; and in civilian life was working as a file clerk for a cabinet company. His father was then described as a "distributor" for a bakery company.
In 1940 Eugene was single, living on his own, and working as a porter at the Crown Street Peck Memorial Hospital. One year later, in 1941, Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving throughout WWII until his discharge in June of 1945. His father, Joseph, died just two years later on March 27, 1947.
Eugene F. Kyhlberger died aged 85, on July 19, 1996, at the Sea Crest Health Care Center, and was buried on Hart Island.
