Elwood Leo Tyler was born September 21, 1912 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the son of Anderson and Nancy "Nannie" (Tansy) Tyler. Elwood had at least five siblings: Lena, Emerich, and Mary born in Tennessee, Leonard and Annie born in Illinois.
Anderson Tyler died in 1916 in East St. Louis. In 1920 Nannie Tyler was a widow with six children living at 1909 E. Missouri Street in Evansville, Indiana. She supported the family by working as a laundress at her home.
In 1931 Elwood and his brother Leonard were both working as porters at the National Jewelry Co. in Evansville. Elwood lived at 524 S. Evans Avenue. Leonard lived with their brother Emerich and his wife at 1243 E. Sycamore.
During World War II, Elwood had to register for the draft. He gave his address as 3621 S. State Street, Chicago, Illinois, and his next of kin was his mother, "Mrs. Nannie Tandsy", who lived at R R #2 Chandler, Indiana. His employer was Harry Rosin, at 847 E. 43rd Street, Chicago. Elwood was described as Negro, 5' 10" tall, weighed 160 pounds, with brown eyes, black hair, and a light brown complexion.
Elwood Tyler's last residence was in the Bronx, New York City. He died on June 19, 1992 at Fieldstone Lodge Care Center. He was buried almost two years later, March 8, 1994 on Hart Island.
