Elvin Emanuel was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1918, on either March 10 or 12 (even the Social Security records cannot agree.) He was the son of Julius and Eva (Akins) Emanuel. Elvin had at least five siblings: brothers Julius, Henry, E.V., Griffin and Joe. In 1920 the family lived on Orange Street in Bainbridge, Georgia, where their father Julius supported the family as a house carpenter.
Ten years later Elvin and Joe were the only two children remaining at home with their parents. Their home at 555 Orange Street had a value of approximately $2200.
By 1940 Elvin had left home, and was living with his cousin Charles Edwards on Montgomery Street in Newark, New Jersey. Elvin's occupation was listed as "apartment house", whether as a handyman, super, or manager is unknown.
Later that same year Elvin registered for the draft. He stated his address was 203 W. 122nd Street, Bronx, New York. His brother Julius (who also lived in the Bronx) was his next of kin. Elvin was unemployed, and described as 5' 7 1/2" tall, weighed 135 pounds, with black eyes, black hair, and black complexion.
Elvin Emanuel's last residence was in New York City. He died on March 20, 1994, and was buried April 7, 1994 on Hart Island.
