Else A. Marschall was born January 19, 1902, in Osnabrück, Germany.
On May 20, 1952 she sailed from Southampton, England on the Cunard White Star Liner the Mauretania, traveling tourist class, bound for New York City. She gave her address as 27 Eaton Square in London, and her occupation as "cook." She arrived in New York City on May 26, 1952, after a voyage of six days at sea.
On June 30, 1956, Else again crossed the Atlantic, this time on the luxurious French ocean liner the S.S. Ile de France; she returned from Southampton, England to New York City on that same ship, arriving on September 17, 1956.
Else narrowly missed one of the great sea-rescues of her time. On July 26, 1956, between her two voyages on the Ile de France, the ship took part in the rescue of 753 survivors of the sinking of the S.S. Andrea Doria following its collision with the M.S. Stockholm, just off of the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The ship was honored with the Gallant Ship Award citation from the DOT Maritime Administration.
On July 2, 1958, Else traveled to Hamilton, Bermuda, this time flying, not sailing, on Pan American Airlines flight 133. She was still a German citizen at that time, although she lived at 1218 E. 86th Street in New York City.
In the 1990's Else lived at 4525 Kissena Blvd. in Flushing, Queens.
Else A. Marschall died aged 95, on May 16, 1997. She was buried on Hart Island.
