Edward Nowakowski was born September 24, 1917 in Kings County, New York, the son of Stanislas and Stephania Nowakowski. Both parents were Polish immigrants, and Stanislas supported the family be working as a mason for a contractor.
Edward was one of nine children, as follows: Stanislas or Stanley, Walter, Charles, John, Edward, Wanda, Irene, Anna and Stephen. In 1920 they were living at 677 Third Avenue in Brooklyn.
Sometime before 1926, Edward's father Stanislas died, leaving his large family to shift for themselves.
By 1940 six of the adult children in the home are working various jobs. Stanley is a sales clerk in a liquor store, Joseph was working in the shipping department of a sugar warehouse, Charles was a watchman at the New York World's Fair, John was a clerk in a furniture store, Edward was a "new worker", and Wanda was an operator in a "leather novelties" business. They lived at 624 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, at least through the 1950's.
When Edward registered for the World War II draft, he was still single and living at home. He stated that he was unemployed. He was described at 5' 5" tall, weighed 140 pounds, with brown eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.
In 1950 Edward was working as a helper to a boilermaker. His Social Security number was issued before 1951 in New York state. He began claiming his Social Security benefits on March 15, 1965. His last residence was in Brooklyn.
Edward Nowakowski died on December 24, 1996 at Brooklyn Hospital Center. He was buried March 12, 1997 on Hart Island.
