Edward John Holub was born February 9, 1920 in Manhattan, the son of Louis and Hattie Anna (Kratovil or Kratochil) Holub. He had one sibling, older brother Louis Jr. Both parent were immigrants from Czechoslovakia (sometimes known as Bohemia, now as the Czech Republic.) Louis supported the family by working as a men's tailor in a department store, or men's clothing store.

In 1925 the family was living at 431 E 71st Street in New York City. Five years later they had moved to 1278-80 First Avenue in Manhattan, and Edward was the only child remaining at home.

By 1940 Edward was in his second year of college, working part time as a stock clerk. At the time he filled out his draft card at the beginning of World War II, the family was living at 96-08 Alstyne Avenue in Corona, Queens. Edward stated he was an industrial engineer. He was described as 5' 10" tall, weighed 130 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion.

Soon after this, Edward's mother Hattie died of pneumonia and myocarditis on March 15, 1943, and was buried at Linden Hill Cemetery.

In 1950 Edward and his widowed father  were living at 9140 Lamont Avenue in Flushing. Louis at the age of 68 continued to work as a tailor, and Edward was a Navy Architect employed by the government.

Edward's last residence according to the Social Security Administration was in Flushing.

Edward John Holub died on October 1, 2002.  He was buried December 3, 2002 on Hart Island.
