Cyril Heald was born on March 11, 1908, in Blackburn, England, the son of John and Ada (Lomax) Heald. Cyril came to the United States (traveling from Liverpool to Boston, Massachusetts) with his parents in June of 1910 on the ship S.S. Saxonia. The family settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with a sister, Rene, being born there in 1912.

The family traveled to England in November of 1920, visiting Ada's brother, W.H. Lomax, in Blackburn. They returned from London to New York on on the S.S. Caronia, giving their final destination as Worcester, Massachusetts.

Cyril's father, John, worked as an "overlooker" or a supervisor. The family added a third child, younger brother Clifford, born in 1921 in Massachusetts.

By 1930, at the age of 22, Cyril was a patient living in the historic facilities of the Taunton State Hospital in Taunton, Massachusetts. In 1940 he was a resident of the much larger and newer (built in 1912) Creedmore State Hospital in Queens, New York.

Cyril Heald died aged 95 on May 7, 2003, at Peninsula Hospital Center. He was buried on Hart Island.
