Clinton Lawrence Caldwell was born August 14, 1913, at Hudson Falls, New York, the son of Charles A. and Margaret (Lenahen) Caldwell. He had three older siblings: a sister, Edith M. born around 1907, and two brothers, Francis Harold, born 1908, and Adelbert C., born 1910. In 1915 the family lived in Kingsbury, New York, and from 1920 to at least 1940 in Niagara Falls, New York; living variously on Fifth St., Whirlpool St. and Eleventh St.
His father, Charles, worked as a "barn man" at a brewing company in 1920, but by 1930 Margaret was widowed, living with only the three boys. Clinton was still a student, Harold was working as a "craftsman" at the Rackett Mfg. Company, and Adelbert was working as an "ice man" at an "ice house."
In 1940, only Adelbert and Clinton still lived at home with their mother. Adelbert, benefiting from one of the government programs established during the Great Depression, was working as a laborer for the "WPA", the Works Progress Administration. Clinton had completed two years of high school before entering the work force, and was employed as a desk clerk in a hotel.
Clinton L. Caldwell last lived at Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. He died on August 4, 1989, and was buried on Hart Island.
