Cleveland Troupe Jr. (not "Clevand") was born June 21, 1923 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the son of Cleveland Sr. and Albertha Troupe. Both of Cleveland's parents were from Georgia, and the two oldest sons- Earnest and Aris, were born there before the family moved to New Jersey. Cleveland was followed by siblings Dorothy, Hellen, and Clayton. The family lived at 1055 Grand Street in Elizabeth, and Cleveland Sr. supported the family as a public laborer.
In 1940 at the age of 18 Cleveland spent some time as an inmate of the New Jersey State Home for Boys. Shortly after this he registered for the World War II draft. He was living at 180 Front Street in Newark, New Jersey. He was described as 5' 4 1/2" tall, weighed 137 pounds, with brown eyes, black hair, and a dark brown complexion. He had a scar on the bridge of his nose, a scar on his forehead, and a scar on the thumb of his right hand.
Cleveland enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 23, 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He stated that he was a resident of Union, New Jersey, that he had finished four years of high school, and his civil occupation was in the category of "skilled occupations in the manufacture of misc. products."
The first month after enlistment Cleveland was hospitalized for an illness, and again in April and May of 1944. He continued work in the Quartermaster Corps until November, when he was admitted again with illness. In December...back to the hospital, this time for a face injury sustained during a "non-battle assault or fighting."
In January of 1945 at Fort Devens in Massachusetts, Cleveland was once more hospitalized with illness, and this time he was discharged "for medical reasons but not for any residual condition."
Cleveland Troupe Jr. died on August 16, 1988. On September 16, 1988 he was buried on Hart Island.
