Catherine was my Aunt. I never met her. Her mother passed away from tuberculosis at the age of 26 when Catherine was 5 years old. Catherine became a ward of the state and sent to live with a family on Long Island. I don't know how long she was there but by the 1950 census she was back with her father (my grandfather) and his new wife. My mother is Catherine's sister, older by two years. My mother has great difficulty getting along with others and often speaks poorly of people that don't fit whatever role she has decided for them. She refused to share any information about Catherine, except for the occasional disparaging remark about some silly thing. Anyway, I discovered Hart Island as Catherine's place of rest on Ancestry. I really don't know anything about her and I wish I knew more. She lived in Astoria NY in an apartment, then somehow ended up in the Lyden Nursing home in Astoria, where she passed away. It appeared she was in the ER in August, then a resident at Lyden where in mid September she was returned to the ER, then back to Lyden where she passed a week later. She was only 63 years old. Her certificate of death shows "unknown" for parents, occupation, etc.. I am beyond grateful for The Hart Island Project's Traveling Cloud Museum as a place to claim and remember loved ones who may have been lost to us in this lifetime. Catherine, may you rest in peace.
