I didn't know Carlo, but was moved to tell what I could of his story in the hopes that a relative or friend might one day pause and reflect on his life. LJB

Carlo Vincenzo was born on 5 May 1894 in Incisa Scapaccino (Belbo), Asti, Piedmont, Italy.*
When he was 27, he sailed to North America on the SS Giuseppe Verdi from Genoa, Italy, departing on the 20 of January 1921 and arriving in New York on February 3rd.
A 1939 passenger list also shows him making a trip from Le Havre, France to New York. His ship, the SS Grasse, departed from the port of Le Havre, France, on 23 December 1939 and arrived at the port of New York on 8 January 1940. Thereafter, he seems to have lived entirely in New York City.
In 1940 he filed his papers with the Superior Court of New York to apply for US citizenship. In them he states his address was 354 10th Avenue, New York; that he was a restaurant worker; a single man, 45 years old, with brown eyes, gray hair, 5'4" tall and weighed 135 pounds. He also stated that he had immigrated to the US from Le Havre, France on the SS Grasse January 9th, 1940 with $6 in his possession. Interestingly, Carlo was detained at Ellis Island as "LPC" (Likely Public Charge) which meant he was considered a possible burden on the public. It appears he was released the next day and was served one dinner meal.
In 1942, at the age of 48, he registered for WWII draft.
Carlo died on June 28, 1984 in New York City and was buried in a mass grave on Hart Island, Bronx, New York.
His mother's name was Teresa Tornato and his uncle was Giuseppi Tornato.

*Birth Place: In 1863, Incisa changed its name to Incisa Belbo. In 1928, Incisa Belbo changed its name to Incisa Scapaccino. In 1935, Incisa Scapaccino became a municipality in the province of Asti.
