     August Germain Roels was born in the town of Schaerbeek, Belgium on 6 May 1902.  He worked as an able bodied seaman during the early 1920's and was discharged in the port of New York.

He is described as being 5 feet 5 inches tall, with gray eyes, and light brown hair on his WWII Draft Registration Card.  He also states his occupation to be "writer" and further, as a "writer of fiction" on the 1940 US Census.

August traveled to Europe in the 1950's with Katherine Reynolds, an English woman with whom he lived. First to England, then Belgium, and returning to the USA from Italy in 1958.  They married in November of 1958.  Katherine lived until 1984 and is also buried on Hart Island.

August died on the 22nd of July 1983 and was buried on Hart Island on the 30th of August 1983.
