Arthur "Art" Scott Gilman III was born March 2, 1911 in Hackensack, New Jersey, the son of Arthur Scott Gilman Jr. and his wife Anne B. He had two sisters, Margaret born around 1905, and Rhoda born around 1908. In 1920 the family lived on Shepherd Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and father Arthur supported the family as a bank clerk.
On October 28, 1933 Art married Elizabeth Cushing in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A few months later his father Arthur S. Gilman Jr. died on February 13, 1934 in Boston.
Art registered for the draft during World War II. They lived at 20 Knox Street in Belmont, Massachusetts. Art was employed at the Harvard University Press in Cambridge. He was described as 5' 10" tall, weighed 140 pounds, brown eyes, brown hair, a light complexion, and he wore glasses.
In 1940 the family was living in Somerville, Massachusetts, and Art was the assistant manager of a publishing house, with an income of approximately $1200. They had four children, Arthur, Sarah, Elizabeth and John.
Art began receiving Social Security benefits on January 3, 1973. His last residence was in the Bronx, New York City.
Arthur Scott Gilman died September 12, 1988 at SBH Health System. He was buried September 20, 1988 on Hart Island.
