Antonio Bernard was born Antonio Bernard y Alonso on June 13, 1908 in Santurce, Puerto Rico, the son of Alonso Santo and Francisca Bernard. He had four half siblings: Constancia, Angel, Francisco and Pedro.
On August 17, 1926 Antonio married Maria Morales Cruz, the daughter of Aniceto Morales and Maria Encanaero Cruz.
In 1930 the couple was living in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with their son Victor Jose, who had been born in 1927. Antonio worked as a chauffeur for a private family.
Five years later Antonio was married to a different woman- Evelina Ferrer y Colon. In 1935 they lived on Calle Colon in San Juan with their daughter Jeny. By 1940 they were living on Calle Victor Lopez in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. They also had a son, Tony, born in 1936. Antonio was still working as a chauffeur.
That same year Antonio registered for the United States draft. He gave his address as 23 Victor Lopez, Santurce, Puerto Rico. As the "person who will always know your address" he listed his brother Francisco Rios. He was employed by Mr. Eugenio Abbott of the Colgate Palmolive Peet Company. Antonio was described as having black eyes, black hair, and a light complexion.
In 1945 Antonio was living in New York, at 758 Kelly St. Apt. 4E in the Bronx. On August 18 he left Puerto Rico traveling back to the United States, landing in Pennsylvania on August 25, 1945.
At the time of the 1950 census Antonio was living as a lodger at 1884 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. He stated he was separated (not married or divorced) and worked as a machine operator in a belt factory.
Antonio was able to claim his Social Security benefits beginning April 8, 1970. His last residence was in New York City.
