Alfred Herbert Melinie was born on 31 December, 1910 in Plattenville, an unincorporated community in Assumption Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of service station attendant/manager, Maxime Melinie and home keeper, Inez Aucion. Alfred was the eldest of seven children, Lester (b. c1910), Elmo (b. c1911), London (b. c1912), Annamay (b. c1921), Lillian (b. c1922) and Nola (b. c1924). In 1930 Lester was working as a helper with his father at an oil station and Elmo and London were working as soda dispensers at the local drug store.
Alfred’s youngest sister Nola passed away on Jun. 22, 1933 when she was 9 years old.
By 1940 Alfred was 28 and living on 266 West 46th St, near Times Square in New York City. He was single and employed as a manager at a restaurant. He had not attended college but had attended school until the 8th grade.
Little is known about Alfred’s life post 1940. He is registered as residing in Long Island after 1970 and passed away at Mount Sinai West on 18 February 1999 at the age of 88. He is buried on Hart’s Island.
