Abraham Ellis was born September 15, 1911 in London, England, the son of Isaac and Dora (Vogelbaum) Ellis. Isaac came to the United States in 1913, followed by Dora and their three children in 1916. On December 9, 1916 they left Liverpool, England, traveling steerage on the S.S. Carpathia. Dora left behind a sister, Mrs. Lipschitz, who lived at 18 Nottingham Place in Stepney. The three children were Sadie, age 11, Mary age 8, and Abraham, age 5. Abraham was described as " 3'6" tall, dark complexion, dark hair, brown eyes." They arrived in New York City on December 21, 1916.
In 1920 the family lived on 166th Street in the Bronx. Isaac supported the family working in the business of "ladies coats."
Sometime between 1920 and 1930 the father, Isaac Ellis, died. When the 1930 census was recorded, the widowed Dora and her three children were living on Mace Avenue in the Bronx. Their rent was $62 a month, covered by all three children working: Sadie as a secretary for a poultry firm, Mary as a secretary in the motion picture business, and 18 year old Abraham as a clerk in a law office.
On February 22, 1940 Abraham married Nan Perl. The wedding took place in Manhattan, and was witnessed by Larry Walkenberg and Sidney Estroff. Abraham stated his address was 1878 Harrison Avenue in the Bronx, and he was employed as an attorney.
Later that same year the couple was living at 300 W. 23rd Street, Apt. 16A in Manhattan. Nan, with two years of college education, worked as a secretary for a chemical company. Abraham, with four years of college, was an attorney at the firm of Ellis and Mersel, located at 521 5th Avenue. When he registered for the draft, Abraham was described as 5'9" tall, weighed 155 pounds, with brown eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion.
By 1950 Abraham and Nan were still at the 23rd Street address. Nan was no longer working outside the home, with Abraham still supporting them as a lawyer.
Abraham Ellis died on May 11, 2004 (according to Social Security records) at NYU Langone Tisch Hospital. He was buried more than two years later, September 26, 2006, on Hart Island.
