My Dad, Elbert Heard, Sr., was a devoted husband and father to five children.  His main occupation was as a long distance truck driver.  As a young man, my father entered the armed forces serving in the Army during the Korean War and World War II.  During his service to his country, he was awarded the Purple Heart, National Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Unit Metal in Korea.

My Husband, James extensive research discovered that my Father was buried in Hart Island in 1991.  Before discovering this, he was working intensely to find out where he was buried.  Needless to say my heart was filled with excitement the  day James informed me he found my Dad, and then suddenly dropped with anguish over the fact he was buried in an unknown grave on Harts Island.  I was extremely saddened by this announcement for several reasons; my dad has family in New York where he died and he was not unloved and unknown.  He has five children, who love him dearly.  I cherished my dad because he always treated me, his baby girl, like a princess.  He made me feel important, everyday. I could talk to him about anything and he would listen intensely and give me advice I remember to this day.  His loss is still a pain in my heart that has not subsided since the last day I saw him when I was 16 years old, I am now 60 years old.

I would give anything to be at his side the day he died, so I could tell him how much I love him and to give him the burial, a purple heart recepient and army veteran of two wars deserves.  Dad, I tried to bring you home where you belong, please know I tried.  I miss you dearly, you will live in my heart and mind all the days of my life and beyond...

Rest in Heaven,  Your Baby Girl
