I've read that they re-excavate the graves at Hart Island every 15-25 years to make room for more burials. Anyone know how this process works? What do they do with the coffins of the people they dig up? I'm guessing someone buried there in 1968 would have been re-excavated by now making it impossible to find those remains. Anyone know? Thanks.

What I was told by a correction officer who worked on the burial detail in the 1960s, is that they would simply move the remains to one end of trench and the grid over. So the remains become mixed once a grave is re-excavated.

I believe that graves from 1980 to present are currently intact. Everything earlier is not.

Hello,

just joined the project..liking the site...do you have any advice on how to obtain written records of the dead and plot numbers from 1948? I believe my grandather is buried there..he died at Bellevue..
