Even as a boy growing up on a farm in Iowa, I was fascinated and drawn to Hart Island. A few years ago I embarked on a project to record a record of songs about death. A lot of my work is inspired by the places I visit, so I tried to obtain permission to visit Hart Island, in hopes of creating something honoring those who rest there. I never pulled that off but I did end up with many songs that come from other final resting places. Thirteen of those are collected in "Practicing Dying".
